This study aimed to update the methodology used to test the levels of different components of effluent, like volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and volatile solids (VS).
Value for producers:
- Updated and therefore more accurate analysis of effluent makes it easier to identify sources of inefficiency, or to predict methane gas potential.
Recommendations:
- The current standard method used underestimated the VS concentrations by 0-15%
- For best practice VS measurement, the standard method adjusted with VFA should be used in Australian piggeries
