Standardised methodology - testing effluent samples for NATA labs

Project goal

Update the methodology used to test the levels of different components of effluent.

Project summary

This study aimed to update the methodology used to test the levels of different components of effluent, like volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and volatile solids (VS).

Value for producers:

  • Updated and therefore more accurate analysis of effluent makes it easier to identify sources of inefficiency, or to predict methane gas potential.

Recommendations:

  • The current standard method used underestimated the VS concentrations by 0-15%
  • For best practice VS measurement, the standard method adjusted with VFA should be used in Australian piggeries
