Product Labelling
Australian consumers have displayed a substantial interest in the origin of their food and the ingredients in their food. By purchasing Australia grown you are supporting local farmers and businesses.
Country of Origin Labelling (CoOL)
CoOL enables consumers to differentiate pork products that are made from imported or Australian ingredients and make their own decision about which product to purchase. CoOL also plays a key role in minimising and responding to food-related public health and safety risks, especially concerning the increasing number of disease outbreaks such as BSE and Avian Influenza occurring overseas.
CoOL laws exist for fresh and processed pork products through the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Food Standards Code (Standard 1.2.11), implemented via state based laws and the Trade Practices Act.
Made in Australia means a product is substantially transformed in Australia and at least 50 per cent of the cost of production has been incurred in Australia.
Product of Australia means that all of a product's significant ingredients come from Australia, and all or virtually all of the manufacturing or processing is also carried out in Australia.
What about Australian Grown?
Australian Grown is a labelling scheme for fresh and packaged goods, launched in 2007. The Australian Grown campaign enables Australian food producers to brand their products with the iconic green and gold kangaroo symbol and leverage from its influential profile. The Australian Made, Australian Grown logo can only be used on products and produce that meet the criteria set out in the campaign's revised Code of Practice and which are registered with the campaign.
