R & D Program

An overview of APL's R&D process including functions of the R&D Advisory Committee, Specialist Groups and current R&D priorities.

APL's Research & Innovation (R&I) division undertakes the activities previously managed by the Pig Research and Development Corporation (PRDC) prior to the formation of APL. APL has adopted a revised R&D process to facilitate efficient use of R&D resources and maximise research outcomes for industry.

In February 2006 the APL Board established an R&D Advisory Committee (RDAC) to:

· Monitor guidelines, selection criteria and procedures for the initiation and management of R&I division project investments to achieve better alignment to APL strategic objectives and improved reporting to the APL Board, and recommend changes as identified; and

· Advise the APL Board on Business Plans for all relevant R&D programs and for those major projects agreed by the Board.

In addition, the APL Board requested that the RDAC develop a project identification and assessment process to be used internally for developing recommendations for future R&D investments within APL.

The revised R&D process consists of two key components:

· R&D Advisory Committee; and

· R&D Specialist Groups.

The R&D process consists of a number of steps starting with development of research priorities by Specialist Groups. January marks the beginning of the full 18 month cycle of the R&D Process.

R&D Priorities for 2009/2010 have been approved by the R&D Advisory Committee.
