Quarantine & Biosecurity
Part of Australia's competitive advantage in new and existing export markets is its pig herd health status. In order to protect Australia, APL works with government agencies and other stakeholders, responsible for quarantine, to ensure Australia's pig industry needs are addressed.
APL believes it can leverage its enviable herd health status to capitalise on opportunities for growing pork consumption worldwide. However, to do this the pork industry and domestic consumers of imported products must remain protected with appropriate policy settings such as Import Risk Assessments (IRAs) and the Import Food Inspection Program.
Imported Food Inspection Scheme
The Imported Food Inspection Scheme is jointly run by Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). FSANZ develops food risk assessment policy for the Imported Food Inspection Scheme and AQIS has operational responsibility for inspection and sampling.
Import Conditions Database (ICON)
ICON is AQIS's import conditions database. It contains the Australian import conditions for more than 20,000 plant, animal, microbial, mineral and human products. Quarantine requirements for pig meat can be found on ICON.
Pig Meat Import Risk Analysis (IRA)
The Australian Government uses risk analysis to assist in considering the level of quarantine risk associated with the importation of animals, plants and goods. Biosecurity Australia completed its Pig Meat IRA in 2004.
