Stockperson Skill Set Workshop

"Maintain Intensive Production Growing Environments, Care for Health and Welfare of Pigs"

The DPI Pig Health and Research Unit at Bendigo, will be conducting a series of Workshops to cover the core competencies required by Piggery Staff to comply with the Code of Accepted Farming Practice for the Welfare of Pigs. (Which can be found under standard 2).

There will be a series of 8 workshops which will cover the following skill sets:

Typically the Stockperson is an individual who works within the Pork Industry and is therefore able to:

• Understand, articulate and comply with relevant state OHS legislation to ensure a safe workplace.
• Understand, articulate and comply with the pork industry’s APTQ (Australian pork Industry Quality) program.
• Understand, articulate and comply with the model Code of Practice of the Welfare of Animals – Pigs.
• Handle pigs using current industry best practice, thus minimising stress.
• Care for the health and welfare of pigs meeting their correct environmental, housing, feeding and water requirements.
• Use preventative measures and treat where necessary, to ensure the health and welfare of the herd is maintained.
• Undertake documentation and reporting as required by the enterprises’ Standard Operating procedures.

The units of competency comprising the Stockperson Skills Set are drawn from AQF levels 11 and 111 in the Agriculture Qualifications and can be counted towards other agriculture qualifications where this is in accordance with the qualification requirements.

28/05/10 - RTE2150A -  Maintain intensive production growing environments
28/05/10 - RTE2151A -  Care for health and welfare of pigs
11/06/10 - RTE 3136A - Comply with industry animal welfare requirements

17/09/10 - RTE3402A -  Implement animal health control programs
15/10/10 - RTE3407A -  Identify and report unusual disease or plant pest signs
29/10/10 - RTE2129A -  Move and handle pigs
12/11/10 - RTE3712A -  Administer medication to livestock
10/12/10 - RTE3713A  - Carry out workplace OHS procedures

Who should attend?

It is a requirement under the Code that there must be a staff member on each piggery who is deemed competent to maintain the health and welfare of pigs. We suggest that leading hands / supervisors should attend in order to supervise trainee staff. Ideally all staff would do these competencies, but given the turnover rate of staff this may not be always practical.

These workshops will commence at 10am and finish at 4pm. They are intended to deliver the underlying knowledge of these competencies and will complement an on farm audit of the participants against the elements of each competency.
